Our Story

Since the year 1998, immediately following his studies in Economics and Cultural Anthropology in Marburg and Penn State, Prof. Dr. Mark Oelmann started focussing on network sector economics from very different perspectives. In the Investment Banking Department of Deutsche Bank AG, among other things, he dealt with the project financing issues of wind energy parts – long before the existence of the Renewable Energy Law.

He continued managerial assessments in the energy unit at Capgemini Consulting, a provider of stategic management consulting services, and stepped into macroeconomic issues as well. He acquired a bird’s eye view as a doctoral candidate at the University of Cologne under Prof. Dr. Juergen B. Donges, the longtime Chairman of the "German Council of Economic Experts". Then, at the Scientific Institute for Infrastructure and Communication (Wissenschaftliches Institut für Infrastruktur und Kommunikationsdienste, WIK GmbH), Prof. Dr. Oelmann dealt with much more concrete issues in society as a whole. Although his focus was clearly in the area of national and international water supply and wastewater disposal, he learnt from the lively debates how to transfer concepts among network sectors, particularly energy, post, transportation and waste.

In March 2011, Mark Oelmann became professor for Water and Energy Economics and head of the newly created Bachelor programme "Energy and Water Management" at the public college Hochschule Ruhr West in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany.

Christoph Czichy joined the department in September 2011 as research assistant and important sparring partner in the organisation of the programme. Prior to this he completed his Master’s degree in Economics while focussing on Statistics & Econometrics as well as Energy Management at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Together, the economists have conducted a multitude of national and international consulting projects and tie their focus in with the prior expertise of Prof. Dr. Mark Oelmann. Due to the extraordinarily positive feedback and the growing number of consulting contracts, the next logical step was the establishment of their own consulting firm. As an added bonus some of the staff at MOcons are valued colleagues from earlier years.

MOcons GmbH & Co. KG was established in May 2014 and is a company of the Hochschule Ruhr West officially founded by some of its staff. Close collaboration with the college ensures a win-win situation of the starbust for both partners.
